Climate protection projects
An integral part of our approach to managing the greenhouse gas emissions generated at our office locations is offsetting these emissions. We therefore purchase emission reduction certificates annually from selected climate protection projects.
One such project, which we have been supporting since 2019, is the construction of small-scale biogas plants in Nepal.
This project is organised by atmosfair, a non-profit organisation based in Berlin. Our support for the project has helped to fund the construction and maintenance of several hundred small-scale biogas plants in Nepal. These plants are fuelled by cow dung and replace the open fires that are otherwise common in the country. According to the project organiser, each plant can save approximately 3 tonnes of CO2 per year. At the same time, this reduces the demand for firewood. Since September 2022, in addition to supporting the construction of new biogas plants, we have been supporting a local waste management project in the region.
The project contributes to equitable access to affordable clean drinking water.
wpd has ensured the electrification of a health center by installing a rooftop solar system.
wpd is funding the construction and repair of small-scale biogas plants in Nepal. These replace open fires, thereby reducing the demand for firewood and the associated greenhouse gas emissions.
wpd supports the rewetting of a small area of marshland in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in collaboration with the State Forestry Institute of Mecklenburg Western Pomerania.
Within the company, many steps have already been taken with respect to sustainability.
The project has also set itself the goal of protecting existing forested areas and reforesting areas that had been cleared, preserving the natural biodiversity, as well as serving as a centre for information and training (both theoretical and practical) in the sustainable use of forests.
Traditional lighting sources such as petroleum lamps, candles or small, battery-driven lamps are being replaced by the distribution of solar lamps.
