wpd has built three large wind farms in Spain in record time. The projects are part of a project cluster on the Torozos plateau in the Castilla y León region, which includes the wind farms El Poleo (14 Siemens Gamesa G132 wind turbines with 3.4 MW each), Las Panaderas (13 wind turbines of the same type), Navillas and Corralnuevo (12 Siemens Gamesa G132 each). The wind farms share a grid connection in La Mudarra, the largest transformer station in the north-east of the country.

At the beginning of December, wpd was able to achieve important milestones there: After the El Poleo project had already fed the first kilowatt hour into the transmission grid in November, the Las Panaderas and Navillas wind farms have now also been commissioned. Since the start of construction of the infrastructure in spring this year, a total of 39 turbines have been erected and put into operation.

Ralf Ketteler, wpd’s country manager for Spain, points out that the company was able to set record-breaking marks in the project: “We are very happy and proud of our entire team, which has managed to obtain the necessary permits, secure the financing, build the projects and connect them to the grid within just 2 years.” The three wind farms were financed by wpd on the basis of Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), which have a 10-year term.

The second implementation phase of the Torozos project has already begun: Financing has been secured for the Corralnuevo wind farm and the 12 Siemens Gamesa wind turbines with a total capacity of 41.58 MW have already been ordered. With the commissioning in 2020, the Torozos portfolio will then comprise 176 MW of capacity.
