Green electricity for 40,000 households
Bremen, July 28, 2009. Germanys leading developer and operator of wind farms, wpd think energy, this week sold five onshore wind farms in Germany (Brandenburg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony-Anhalt) to Stadtwerke München (Munich Public Services). The projects, which were planned and erected by wpd, consist of 25 Enercon and Vestas wind turbines with a capacity of 2 MW each. With the total capacity of 50 MW, approximately 100 gigawatt hours (100 million kWh) of green electricity may be produced annually. This quantum is the equal of the annual consumption of about 40,000 Munich households. In comparison to conventional power plants, some 60,000 tons of CO2 can thus be saved annually. The turbines have successfully absolved their test run and have been feeding in energy into the grid for some time already. Due to the many years of experience as developer and operator, wpd will take on the operation of the five SWM wind farms.
We are very happy for the commitment of Stadtwerke München. In partnerships with public services of municipalities, we believe we can strengthen the acceptance in politics and the population and thus to directly further the expansion. This shows: We stand united in new alliances for a turn in energy matters, declares Dr. Klaus Meier, CEO of wpd AG.
Dr. Kurt Mühlhäuser, Chairman of SWMs management board:
Our expansion offensive Renewable Energies is making remarkable progress. With the hitherto implemented projects alone, we were able to increase our production of green energy by 160 percent: from 350 million kilowatt hours annually now to 920 million kWh then. This equals the annual consumption of 370,000 households in Munich. So Im very optimistic to reach our ambitioned goal earlier than anticipated: Munich shall be the first German major city where all private households shall be supplied with energy gained by renewable methods. To reach this goal we focus on a broad spectrum of renewable energies. In this, we cooperate with renowned partners who are adequately experienced. In wpd think energy, a leading European wind energy company is supporting us as park operator.
