Wind power has already established itself on the market in Italy: turbines have been constructed in Italy since the end of the 1990s. The last three years saw a strong growth with a yearly expansion of some 1,000 MW. However, the current quota system will run out at the end of 2015. It is now up to politics to introduce a follow-up system in order to further enable meeting expansion target according to national power strategies.

A total of 6,747 MW was being operated in Italy by the end of 2011.

The wpd group has been active with its own office in Rome since 2008 and it is planning projects in the order of 370 MW.
